How do you portray pinup girls for our troopers without crossing that fine line?
One thing that has been on our minds since we started the ISO two years ago is that we need to tread lightly when using Lucas Film’s creative property. We need to operate in good taste or Uncle George could take his ball and go home.
So… how do you portray pinup girls for our troopers without crossing that fine line from classy and feminine to overtly sexual or pornographic?
This is a hard question to answer because everyone has a different line based on their own morals and beliefs. I think the best guide I can give you is: if you’re not sure... don’t do it. These next 18 months are going to be crucial for the ISO to develop a solid relationship with Lucas Film. Star Wars is a family franchise and we need to avoid any photos or merchandise which might cause the powers that be to ask us to cease and desist.
With that said, you can always ask Jen Lafortune, Terri Hodges or me for their interpretation on an idea or photo . We can help guide you in the right direction. If you want a rule of thumb… sexy should be accidental. If you look at a lot of Gil Elvgren’s artwork you will see (in all the clothed pieces) the girls are caught unawares. Similarly, Marilyn Monroe was holding her skirt down, not flipping it up.
Another thing you need to consider is the ISO has members who are in high profile professions that interact with the public. Our behavior is going to reflect on them. Unless we use the utmost taste and respect we could prevent them from being able to participate for fear of backlash in their jobs.
